Case Study : India
- A
colonized mindset(Part 1)
Independence is a hoax. In
hearts we are still a child, who is inertly drawn by candies shown to us, never
the real thing. We still live in world of sheep’s where our tongue and very
logic of logic is defined by the circumvent influence factor. We are all
bi-products of a large scale mass effect very cunningly and cold-bloodedly
framed by invisible sources.
The hypothesis of colonization
cannot be studied isolated from study of 3 pillars on which it stands namely power,
marketing and anthropology. Power gives flesh to marketing and anthropology
gives the skeleton to it. But the most important thing in colonization is
amusingly very simple. Beauty of most complex problems is simplicity of its
origin. Making a person dream and make him crave for that dream in an insecure
corner of person.
Except for an exceptional
few, all of us desire to give some color to life. We don’t want our lives
meaningless. And second common human trait is insecurity and preservation instincts
and reflexes which we have borrowed from our primate ancestors.
The intelligence of marketing
lies is deep understanding of generalized conception of color for different
people, creating a little space for product to become a part of fantacy painting of
your consumer’s mind.
On some way or the other every culture comes across influences, but never before has any culture soo multifaceted has gone through such vagabond transitions as India has. The problem with nation is not that we have to compete with our future, but we have to compete with our glorious past.
Leaving aside the military aspect, back then India was extremely complete nation. Completeness lied in being able to find artist expressions, scientific expressions, and yet without any qualms, very few raids, few issues.
As an Indian, we find ourselves ashamed or at some level primordial, when someone talks that India used to stand for something like Liberation or 'Mukti'. It is just that at the back of our mind's we have started to reconcile any saskritised word as an untouchable zone associated with faiths and beliefs, and as neo-liberalist label as 'Hindu' Ideology. If you time travel in the so called pre-colonial era, and do some research, it was like a curiousity, a quest, a fantacy which ruled the world at a time and was infact improperly grasped as a god fearing cobweb of beliefs and daily rituals. It is like today's curiosity of understanding the anatomy of mind, complexity of nature, etc. Just that it is slightly polished by touch of current vocabulary and brimmed with latin words which are considered so called superior because of the very day to day teaching learning, where every important term, theory, proof, hypothesis, lemma is either termed as greek/latin origin word or is latinzied in some way.

Speaking about Caste system, it was only around 200 BC that caste started to become big thing. Manuscript itself was written dated back nearby to that era. Hence it would be huge misnomer to say, caste was basis of India.Varna's were never barred from pursuing the highest ideal at that time, mukti or more latinized "Libertation" or even more, the quest that all sciences are performing . . . .
We all know how easy it is to mislead a majority, simply by twisting the facts. During shadowy patch of colonial India, the most dominant experience amongst the masses was Fear. Hence the highest of ideal of India, Liberation, a brilliant cocktail of subtle science and broader human aspiration, unfortunately became more like expression of freedom from invasion, freedom from the misery. The meaning of freedom got decimated to mere rudimentary defination. It is use of mathematics for mere addition and subtraction. We all know, mathematics is much more than addition and subtraction, it is about abstraction, weaving out a vocabulary to express the most intricate concepts.
If we draw a parallel between Mathamatics and Mukti in first they both start with 'M' :), I know how people say "add a few physics words in your lectures and people will listen to any crap you speak :p, but that is not my intention anyways" secondly both are concepts which leave out large gaps of multiple interpretation, which intern strengthens and articizies(makes it more artistic), connects to human aspiration of creativity. For example there is chinese way of multiplication, then vedic mathematics, abacus, etc and in this space, there is a space for you too to spawn your way out.
Similarly in mukti, you can dance out like bharatynatyam to reach that perfection of geometry, you can simply sit silent and meditate to reach that state and of course innumerable ways and spaces for you to aspire.
According to me, logic is the most clerical definition to something like mathematics which has rather much more to offer, similar thing happened with yoga too where acrobatics, and few posture became synonymous with something like yoga, which is a word assigned to describe ways of aspiring mukti.
Both these aspirations suffer from a common problem, which is room for mis-interpretation. The more clerical or less evolved, an idea or a concept is, the less is the room for mis-interpretation, and confusion. Like you can't argue with me, 2+2=5! This basic arithmetic is example of basic logic, which is completely full proof,no doubts, but there is sparse room for expansion. But we know, that mathematics is much more than that, and If we limit ourselves to secure domain of full proof logic, then there is no growth at all !
There are differences also, in sence, if axioms are given for mathematics, and it is derived in some away, it is more and less verifiable, even though there may be millions of different ways to arriving at the same conclusion which is similar to the prior. But science is not like mathematics, it is even more prone to subjective changes of model, changing or improving its models with better and better models of experimentation.
So now, suppose no technology would have come out of mathematics, we would have simply decimated mathematics the same way idea of mukti has been. You would have simply told mathematicians or artists who are doing mind boggling work belonging to occident as crazy lunatics.
But because we widely see the technology, and I would say universal dreaming machine, such as cinematography which potrays same confusions, complications of human aspirations in a vivid grandeur way, aided with Technology as an aid to inspired people, making them even more inspired and creative, we somewhere start thinking mukti as an oriental concept as infirior. But if the same thing presented in terms of last struggle Einstein to understand things like liberation, which is true, and you would not just be convinced, but also start dreaming. That is the level of deep rooted colonization.
At this time, I am not trying to belittle the extraordinary contribution of scientific community but I am just saying, that we are simply ignoring the humungous work done in this land.
It may be strange, but the language(not simply words) of communication is a very big thing.
At this point of time, I wish to cite Prof. Vilayanur Ramachandran of UC San diago university about his wonderful insight on confusing metaphor with reality.
Now I will demonstrate live, raw hypothetical case as an example to study , how colonization works. . .
Before I speak anything about any nation, I want to say, It is not these few words which determine course of any nation, it is the hardwork, strife, and wit, and muscular strength which makes a nation, and love it or hate it, british men have shown enormous amount of military and economic leadership.
Let's switch cases.Let us say India has captured british, and now aims to colonize Britain. First thing it will do is change the books. Fill the British books with worst things britain has done, best thing India has done, and make them feel miserable and inferior about themselves. Change the important words to sanskrit origin. Change the official dresscode from Railway Ticket conductor to Official meeting dresscode to saree and kurta. This will make them feel that British way of dress is good and fine but not official, this is call psychological dominance. Anyone wearing blazer will be mocked at, and would be considered a shameful act.
Next stage would be what we called silent dominance. Silent in sense, we never think, that it is dominance but it slowly rules our lives. In this stage, using marketing and media, It will be subtly communicated that how british dance is most primitive like living in dark ages, and Indian dance is symbol of pride. Indian art and dance will be taught compulsory in schools and large shows, parties, festivals will be organized with only Indian forms of dances, something like garba. It will be so much large scaled that the whole dreaming machine of britain will be hijacked by India. This will give complete blow and make british wonder why they are still silly british, why do these silly british ball dance, when I can celebrate such grand Indian dances. The whole equation of superiority and inferiority will be upside down. They will start feeling ashamed of being british and their fantacy will slowly be to dance as indian as possible, sing as indian as possibe, produce movies as indian as possible, have a girlfriend as indian as possible. Why the hell am I british anymore? People will feel otherworldly if they see, and Indian skin anywhere, and will tan their skins to look like Indian actors or actresses. People will love to order food from Indian delicacies instead of british food on parties and food giants will deliver it in 30 minutes, safeguarding reliability.
Liberalist will now fight for being indian like khajurahoo in evoking expressions or erroticism rather than staying typical british who are completely unromantic, an average british women would feel opressed in british cloths and would crave for trying out some choli, where their body is more exposed, and appreciated. Everyone will try to saskritize words they use in order to sound modern and liberal, especially those in top corporate, in order to sound reliable and get contracts, and not be steriotyped by anyone as lame britisher, who is still too tradional.
Point is not that India is good or britain is bad or otherwise. Point is to show how distortion became a part of reality and so deeply that even if we know, we can't change our ways to think.
Living in this 21st Era, we need to change our mindset, Indians must be open to learning british things as well as british be open to learning indian things, let the best of two there for future to cherish. Point is that we should not completely become lob sided and ignore these hidden messages. Especially, for a nation like India, atleast its own people should try and see, that they are even a little bit Indian. Even though the Idea of nationhood is still less than the worldhood, but still it is not a small Idea, and believe me, in terms of diversity, India has equivalant of 4 to 5 worlds within itself only . . . and diversity is mother of creativity and creative spirit and it ough to stay, for which the least we can do is, take pride in the multitudes of Indian expressions we come accross, and cherish at least one or two of them. Maybe they are not well marketed, may be they are not presented in grandeur way, but that is your job to take it with you and bring it to world of a newer version!! isn't it?
As a great sociologist of our time, Prof. Shiv Vishwanathan says "Beauty and Ingenuity of India, is that there is not a single variety of rice, we have 30,000 varieties of it"
If for god forbid, India, becomes one, that day will be dooms day, because, India ough to be many, take pride in the differences, magnify the little details of the culture, and market it well to the next generation, at the same time, not be stubborn and too rigid in accepting gifts that world as whole has to offer. Thing is we need to mingle the best of India, the most diverse of India, into the pool of the constantly growing and evolving world.
Word of Caution
Don't mis-understand spirituality of India, by the foolish interpretations of these baba's and baby's who are an outgrow of the worst kind of leechers. They are the worst of kind, and people following them are even more stupid. Please use your brains while analysing India.
There is difference between creativity and god fearing nature.
Read for yourself the scriptures, etc and if ever you were to trust some people about spirituality and if ever you were to to trust a few spiritual organizations, here are the few, I have researched and are more or less okey and are not blind following, having some scientific basis :
1. Isha Foundation
2. Art of Living
3. Ramakrishna Mission
4. YSF or SRF
Belief itself is blind, scepticism is a great way to live, and let experimentation and experience be the only basis of proof or disproof, and this very Idea.
I am not against diversity, like when I study a signal, I know I can express a simple pulse as
1. linear weighted sum of sines and cosines
2. Wavelet Transform
3. Contourlet, Ridgelet, etc etc etc
but these variations always add to the flora of maths and help in easier application in technolgy, similar should be the standards of appreciation for so called indian forms or music, dances, forms of approach towards mukti, etc,
where the variation should be appreciated, but at the same time, proved or verified experimentally or experientially in some way and should not get hallucinatory . . .
Then let the only thing which proves itself experimentally stay, which revolutionized modern science today, stay. Such standards seems small but whatever technology you see around has come out of rigorous testing and precision facilitating scaling up stuff. Such must be the standards for experimenting with your experiential dimension which India has long stood for, and is very basis of nation.
I know, I have used most harsh words to speak about this topic, and I understand that extreme is wrong both in spirit and action, . . . but i guess you get the spirit of what I wished to convey, problem is that in this tussle of giants, it is we who are constantly fooled in a way that we look intelligent by being fooled, which I want you to be aware of, is danger ahead.
But you do one thing, just go outside your comfort zone and see the world around, observe things carefully and neutrally with any grudges or ideologies, and you will find the words in this blog ringing back to you . . .
goodness should never be an excuse of ignoring and undermining the practical realities existing in world . . . .
